Group Disagreement

Alright this is an idea I want to try out and see how it goes. Each week I want to post a topic with 3 general questions pertaining to that topic, and then have anyone who reads this blog or stumbles across it debate the issues and see where it takes us.

This weeks topic: College Football

1. In light of ESPN's College Gameday coming to a Mountain West school for the 3rd time this year (a remarkable fact) is the Mountain West gaining credibility nationally? Or is it just the Big 3 (TCU, BYU and Utah) that are getting the recognition? Does that credibility put them on the same level as some of the BCS conferences? Will this eventually lead to an automatic bid for the Mountain West into a BCS game?

2. Considering the national landscape of college football this year, will 2 non-bcs teams (Boise St. and TCU/Utah) break the barrier and get into BCS games? Could one play for a title this year? Ever?

3. Finally, how would you fix college football? Playoff? How big of a playoff? Keep everything the same? Why?

Ok feel free to debate any issue that I came up with or create your own as you debate, hopefully everyone will jump in on this. We need some good clean debate going on.

Ready.... Set... Debate!

  1. Ok well I will start it off then...

In response to #1 I think that the mountain west conference is gaining recognition but it is only because of the top 3 teams. But it doesn't matter why as long as they can earn an automatic bid, which if TCU goes to the BCS this year the bid becomes much more likely.

For #2. I would love to say that 2 teams get into the BCS but it wont happen. Boise is going to get killed for being in the WAC, as they should, and TCU will get in after they smoke Utah this weekend. NO non-bcs team will ever play for a championship, the only non-bcs national title is BYU's and will never be won by anyone else.

#3. I want a playoff, give us 8 teams, 4 weeks of football, no byes. The excuse that the athletes can't because of academics is garbage, everyone should want a playoff.

  2. 1) I think it's both. The big three have brought the Mountain West recognition and credibility. The fact that three teams have played so well is why the MWC is credible as opposed to the WAC where only Boise is good.

    2) I think two could get in. One would be better because Boise will get slaughtered in a BCS Bowl game and would actually do more damage to the BCS if they were snubbed instead of whooped.

    3) I competely agree with Kyle. Couldn't put it better.

    4) The Colts will win. They are at home. They have the better QB. Pats O line is suspect. Freeney will put Brady on the turf.

  3. 1 - Whether the Mountain West is receiving more recognition or not doesn't change the fact the BCS is crap.

2 - There's no way the BCS will give up two bowl spots to non BCS schools. I just don't see it happening unless they decide to add a sixth game to the Bowl Championship Series between now and then. That said - and being a fan of both the Mountain West and the WAC - I think TCU will get it, and Boise State won't. No worries though. When Utah State upsets Boise State a week from Saturday, there will be no more dilemma. Ha ha ha! Maybe the BCS will surprise us all this year and fork over two spots.

3 - A playoff is a great idea. If those 8 teams could somehow be pushed to 16 though, I think that would be better. Maybe think about playing 5 games over 4 1/2 weeks. That wouldn't be pushing it I don't think.

  4. Regarding Chris's stuff, I think you bring up a good point on the 1 team in the BCS being better for the big picture. The last thing we want is another Hawaii happening.

Regarding Matt - It would be great if Utah State could pull the upset! I too would love the playoff at 16 teams, the problem is how do you decide who gets in? Conference Champs? At-Large Selections? How?

  5. Dude, I didn't see this post when you put it up. I want to pipe in here as I think I have some great ideas.....

1 - Yes, with TCU going to the BCS, and the real possibility of them playing for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP if Nebraska can pull off the upset vs Texas, the MWC can officially be called LEGIT!!! Worst case scenario now (since im writing on Dec. 3) is that TCU will almost certainly face FLORIDA or BAMA.....and I believe TCU will DOMINATE either one, you wait and see.

2- Well, as we've seen, it took the PERFECT STORM for 2 Non-BCS teams to bust the BCS, and it's happened!!! It's gonna be a fun BCS season with Boise St and TCU in there.

3 - Oh yes, A COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF!!! I would, however, be very unsatisfied with only 8 teams. I dream of a 16-team, and yes, even a 32-team playoff!!!.....single elimination.....only 5 weeks for 32 teams, 4 weeks for 16 teams....played at the higher-ranked teams' house....I know it would be a nightmare for the organizers, but TV ratings would be THROUGH THE ROOF!!!

16 teams is probably better. Just take the top 16 from the BCS, seed them accordingly, and watch em fight to the death!!! It would all start the 1st Saturday in January, and end the 4th Saturday in January. Imagine, every January jam-packed with 15 games between the BEST in College Football!!!

Someone just needs to explain to me how this plan wouldn't be WAY MORE PROFITABLE than the current system???
